Will Napoli invented his first interplanetary calendar in mid-July of 1985. It wasn't until 12 years later when he had completed calendars for all the planets of the solar system that he discovered his original interplanetary calendar for Mars was the first complete calendar for any planet other than Earth and in the years since, it's proven to be the best. It's the only one that is part of a system that allows calendars for any world to be integrated into a collective that shares the same universal time units, the ones we use today. There's much more to it than that though.
