Interplanetary Calendars (ICs) are calendars for the worlds
we know. The first IC was the first calendar for Mars. It was later
followed by calendars for the rest of the planets of the solar system,
and even later for planetoids and distant worlds. Will Napoli, the IC
inventor, proposes a Classification of Worlds System (CWS), which
he used to help create the Interplanetary Calendar System (ICS) in
2007 and 2008.
Planets are being discovered around stars other than the Sun and
worlds beyond Neptune are being discovered in the Solar System
now, so it's timely that the ICS has come about. Contemporary use
of these calendars for space exploration can help prepare the way
for the peopled exploration of the Solar System just now beginning,
and beyond. The ICs can also be used by students of all ages to
better understand the many worlds we now know something about.
It is the year 8 SD (Sol Date) in the
Interplanetary Calendar System. New
Year's Day for year 9 SD is December 22,
2008 CE.
